Could you be our shop manager?

Looking Glass books has recently celebrated its second birthday! In two short years we have established Edinburgh’s most vibrant little indie – but we’ve really only just begun. To help us move forward with our plans for the business we are looking for an extraordinary shop manager. You would be responsible for all aspects of the day to day running of the shop and and café.  If you have the experience and skills required and have demonstrated an ability to manage in a retail bookselling setting - with creativity, flair and imagination, we’d love to hear from you.  Please send a CV to info@lookingglassbooks.com with a covering letter telling us why you would be the perfect candidate.…….

This vacancy is full time - salary is negotiable and dependent on experience.

Independent Booksellers Week is taking place from 28 June to 5 July and you’re invited!

It’s initiated every year by IndieBound, to promote independent bookshops, great books, strong reading communities, and the idea of shopping locally and sustainably. Across the country, lots of independent bookshops will be celebrating, and of course we will be too and we’d like you to join us!

We call ourselves an independent bookshop, but really, we’re entirely dependent  on you – our local community. Where would we be without the community we’re in? Without the parents and toddlers who come along every week for storytime, the booklovers who are always popping in for a chat about exciting new releases and buying their books from us , the local authors who want to celebrate their book launches  here or who generously give their time in countless ways to support the shop –there wouldn’t be a Looking Glass Books worth speaking about. Thanks to all of you – we have now been open for two years! So for Independent Bookseller’s Week this year, we’ve got a whole host of activities planned for you, our book-loving community. Have a look at what’s happening…

Our 2nd Birthday Party

On 2 July at 6pm we’ll throw our doors wide open to all our lovely regulars for a big birthday bash. It’s completely informal and completely free: we just want to be able to thank as many of you as possible for embracing our new-bookshop-on-the-block with such open arms these last two years. There will be a chance on the night to enter our prize draw to win a signed copy of Independent Booksellers Week book award 2014 winner  KATE ATKINSON’ brilliant  LIFE ATER LIFE .

Come along for a drink, a chat, and as we’re all about spreading the book love bring a book for our...

Charity Book-Swap!

Here’s a chance for some serious book exchange: bring a book for our 'bring one'/take one' charity book swap table. Pay a £1 donation and we'll pass it all on to the Edinburgh Sick Kids Foundation! Be a bookseller if you like, writing a book wrap recommendation about why you love the book you’re giving away, or just let it speak for itself....

A Free Indie Pick when you buy any book!

Lovely publishers Canongate, Birlinn, Freight and Faber & Faber are joining the Independent Bookseller celebrations by giving us some carefully selected gems to give away to customers when you buy a book. (from Monday 30th  While stocks last)

Guest Booksellers

We’ve asked some much-loved local authors and publishers as as well as some high-flying members of the Edinburgh booky community  to pick one book they want to ‘sell’ and write a pitch to convince you it should be on your ‘must read’ pile.  How about having your new read being recommended to you by Ian Rankin or Alexander McCall-Smith?  Come in and see what they’ve got to say……
