The Blue Suitcase with Marianne Wheelaghan We hope you can join us for an evening with Marianne Wheelaghan who will be hear to discuss her novel The Blue Suitcase. The Blue Suitcase was inspired by letters and diaries Marianne Wheelaghan found after her mother's death. It tells the story of a Christian German girl growing up in Nazi Germany and explores themes to do with refugees and displaced people, bullying and intimidation, identity, ww2 and family relationships. When it was launched two years ago it was an immediate BestSeller and the interest in it continues to be remarkable. James Robertson says of it: “'We think by now that there can be no more untold stories from the 1930s and the Second World War. Then a book like this comes along and we are once again astonished by the capacity of some humans to do unspeakably cruel things, and of others to survive them. The simple, almost mundane tone of Antonia's diary makes The Blue Suitcase all the more shocking. It's hard to read, but harder to stop.” date: 20/06/13 time: 6.30pm |

Gregory Norminton launches his book Thumbnails In these forty-eight very short stories, Gregory Norminton once again experiments with form, using his stylish and witty prose to examine the nooks and crannies of our distracted lives. Taken as a whole, the collection is an exercise in storytelling, proving that narrative can be found in the most unlikely packages. Sexual love flourishes briefly in a retirement home; British soldiers in eighteenth-century America give a very dubious gift to the natives; a Portuguese naturalist loses his life’s work to Napoleon; a grief-stricken father searches the Australian outback for signs of an extinct lizard; Mephistopheles answers his critics and explains the real origins of Shakespeare’s Hamlet; a roguish life is reduced to endnotes in a biography; an Anglo-Saxon bard despairs of his vocation… These are just a few of the premises that run through the book. Myth, social comedy, tragedy and speculative fiction follow one another in tales that vary widely in form and content – united by the task of conveying a complete narrative with the greatest possible economy. date: 11/06/13 time: TBC |

365 Ways To Get You Writing
Looking Glass is delighted to welcome Jane Cooper to lead us through an evening of creative writing. Sometimes you don't know what to write about. Sometimes you don't knowhow to write better. 365 Ways To Get you Writing will get you past both these problems by providing daily inspiration and advice. The exercises in the book lead to prose fiction, personal writing, poetry and even journalism. Working through the book will teach you how to build characters and get them speaking realistically, how to show rather than tell, how to choose which tense and person works best, and much more besides. Jane Cooper lives in Edinburgh where she teaches English and Creative Writing. She’s the author of six successful school textbooks, and 365 Ways is her first book for adults. During our evening together she’ll take you through some of the tasks from the book, using strange props and prompts to bring them to life. Remember to bring a notebook and pen! |

Labyrinth - landscape of the soul 6.00 Welcome & Introductions:
6.10 Talk: Introduction to the labyrinth as a unique space for de-compressing and renewing the self “Slowly walking the single path, step by step, to the centre of the labyrinth, enjoying the space at the centre and then retracing the same path back out, gives enough time to unwind and let go of everyday concerns in order to renew some sense of inner calm, balance and perspective.
In the fast-paced world in which we now live, we need simple, beautiful places like labyrinths that draw us in by the attraction of their pattern to slow ourselves down, still the busy mind and connect us again with our deep inner resources.” Di Williams 2011: Labyrinth landscape of the soul, Wild Goose, Glasgow 6.30 Walk: An opportunity to enjoy a facilitated walk with others in the beautiful Edinburgh Labyrinth 7.10 Coffee & Chat: Chance to reflect on the experience back in Looking Glass Books The event will be led by Di Williams MBE – author & UK labyrinth master teacher date: 29/08/12 time: 6.00 - 7.30pm entry: free |
